In Book II, the story turns to Olen Nadimov, a scientist who is investigated by Major Devon, and who must convince the Chancellor and other world leaders to trust the solution his team developed. They must counteract a destructive field approaching Earth's orbit. His task becomes much harder when he is called back to the past, back home, to visit his family, when he must make a choice affecting everyone. The use of time travel is again the root of many problems and lessons, and makes use of the "uncaused causal paradox", as well as "time propagation", with much more detail about the technology of the distant future as well as an interim period, our immediate future.
