Moment was a result of my early attempts at novel-writing, taking off from "Daffodils" and "The Painter of Modern Life" (in Another Generation Cometh), but it was also a whole new experiment in short fiction. Essentially, To Lie Within the Moment, is one long prose poem as much as it is a short novel. It's set on the Gulf Coast, with Jim, Mary and Anna, illustrating the meanings of their lives as a way of illustrating mine. Jim is in some ways my ideal self, while his wife Mary represented someone close to me, everything I would rather avoid in women, with Anna as an ideal woman of talent and passion.
